Director ID Requirements are Changing

New Director ID Requirements Are Coming from 1 July 2027

From 1 July 2027, new laws passed under the Treasury Laws Amendment (Business Registries Stabilisation and Uplift) Act 2026 will require companies to report Director Identification Numbers (director IDs) to ASIC.

This change will be required as part of standard company reporting processes, like your annual review, or whenever your director details change.

If you’re already a company director, chances are you already have a director ID. That won’t change. What is changing is that this ID will now need to be formally reported to ASIC, rather than just sitting on file with Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS).

This is part of a bigger push to clean up and secure Australia’s business registers, alongside stronger authentication for anyone creating or updating registry records.

By ASIC having a registry of director IDs, this will:

      • Make it harder for someone to fraudulently use your director or company details.

      • Make it easier to confirm who’s actually running a company.

      • Make sure company records stay more accurate over time.

Essentially it’s about reducing fraud and identity misuse while making sure the public record on who’s directing a company is accurate and reliable.

The good news is you don’t need to do anything urgently, but a few quick checks now can save you the headache later:

        • Make sure you and any co-directors actually have a director ID. If not, it can be applied for through ABRS.

        • Check your company details are current, including your registered address and contact details.

        • Confirm all current directors are correctly recorded, and that names, addresses and contact details are accurate.

        • Compare the director details on the ASIC companies register against what ABRS has on file, and update anything that doesn’t match.

You can review your own director ID details at anytime on the ABRS Manage your director ID page, where you’re able to download a PDF copy or update your details if anything’s changed.

ASIC will begin collecting director ID details as part of the annual review process in the lead-up to 1 July 2027. They will release further guidance as the deadline gets closer, and may reach out directly to affected companies and directors to help with awareness and readiness.

In the meantime, keeping your company and director information accurate is the best way to avoid problems. If anything’s changed on your end, or you’re not sure whether your details are up to date, get in touch with us and we’ll help you sort it out well before the deadline.

Staying compliant with changes like this isn’t just about ticking a box, it’s about protecting your company and making sure the record reflects who’s actually in charge.
